The Best (and Worst) of 2009

Another year down, and with that year, we've seen some amazing things. We've also seen some torturous and terrible things. Here's a breakdown of the best and worst things that most gamers, geeks and nerds should find interesting.

Best Independant Game - Crayon Physics

We received a copy from the creator back in January 2009, and fell in love. It combines strategy with that childhood memory of coloring on everything. With few games being truly original as of late, it was quite a suprise that Crayon Physics was such a hit. With catchy, soothing music and mouse in hand, we took on a world of physics previously only imagined. Yay! Crayon Building Blocks!

Best Game Overall - Borderlands

I know, most of you expected me to pick Dragon Age, but Borderlands had more people captivated. Fast paced environments, combined with semi-cell shading, made Borderlands an Insta-Hit with all of our friends. I'm a huge fan of RPG's, though I tend to hate First Person Shooters, the combination makes me giddy. I've called it "Fallout 3 lite" since I heard of it, and that really is what draws me in.

Best Downloadable Content - Fallout 3 "Broken Steel"

Oh My God! You mean I don't have to stop at level 20 anymore! Woo Hoo! Adding in more achievements, as well as raising the level cap, is only a small portion of what Broken Steel did. Also, I was quite upset by the previous 'end' to the game, and love the fact that now I can continue playing after the original Fallout 3 release's end.

Best Movie - Zombieland

Zombies, zombies and more zombies. We at GeekGirlsOnline LOVE zombies, but when you add in absolutely hilarious dialogue and Bill Murray, you just can't lose! I swear, this has to be the most quotable movie I have seen since Rob Reiner's "A Princess Bride". Also, I must point out, the way the world turns into Zombieland is very appealing to vegans and vegetarians, as you won't have to worry about being the one to bring the apocalypse to us all!

Lifetime Achievement Award - Gary Gygax

Ernest Gary Gygax was an American writer and game designer. His vision touched millions and changed the face of gaming forever. Though Mr. Gygagx died just a few short years ago, we feel he is without a doubt at least partially responsible for all of us being the gamers we are today.

Geek of the Year - LeVar Burton

With this being the first year of GeekGirlsOnilne 'Awards', we really had to dig to decide who we felt would be best for this award. It was a toughie. Finally, we sat down and actually picked through everything we felt was necessary to make this person 'Geek of the Year'. After much deliberation, we finally concluded that 2009's GotY was LeVar Burton, merely because we found out he had done so much for the Geek community, that it had to be him.

Blogger of the Year - Wil Wheaton

This man blogs nearly daily. I don't understand how he can come up with so much to say, let alone how he keeps it so fresh that everyone feels compelled to read it each and every day. Wil has done much to establish himself as his own person, instead of the persona of a character he once played on that sci-fi show.... ^_^

Character of the year - Hiro Nakamura

Every geek I know loves and idolizes Hiro Nakamura as the person they either want to be, or be best friends with. Kind, caring and an uber geek to boot, Hiro is the master of the space/time contiuum in the hit tv series 'Heroes'. YATA!

TV Drama - Heroes

Speaking of Heroes, we're just glad to see the story getting back to it's roots. Before the writer's strike, things were getting a little hairy, and not in a good way. Characters disappearing without explaination, characters living that SHOULD have died, and just overall absurdity. Luckily, that all changed, and Heroes is back to being #1 in our book.

TV Comedy - The Simpsons

20 years later, and still going strong. Is the Simpson's as witty and funny as it was 20 years ago? Of course not, but that doesn't mean we don't still giggle. We ARE the Simpson's Generation. Many of us don't remember a life before, and few will know one after. Still, it's hard to keep topping yourself, week after week, for 20 years, so cut them some slack!

Best Webseries - The Guild

Ahh, WoW-esque gamers and their obessesions with said game. "The Game", as it is so affectionately called, appears to be a World of Warcraft knock-off, but that's ok. The main gamers in the stories remind me of my friends when they used to play Everquest, so it's quite possible it's just a coincidence :) Available for free download via X-Box live, and having dvd's and memorabilia galore, there's absolutely no excuse for you NOT to watch this fantastic webseries! None! Go! Now! Watch!

Best Youtube Video - Tay Zonday 'You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"

All those years ago, Tay Zonday became one of the most popular internet meme's known to man. This European & African  man made millions sing "Chocolate Rain". The song has been featured & parodied in everything from Weezer's 'Pork and Beans' to 'Robot Chicken'. Finally, after everyone had begged him, Tay did his own cover of the beloved Christmas tune "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch", and all was right with the world.

Best RPG/Board Game - Tomb

Made by AEG and released at GenCon 2009, Tomb was the most anticipated board game of the year. Fighting your way through traps, treacheries and even fighting off death, Tomb will become reguarded as one of the best of every gamer's collections.

Best Gadget - iPhone 3Gs

Everyone seems to have an iPhone these days, but few even use the phone capabilities. It's a handheld computer, gaming machine, and everything in between. Apple definitely outdid themselves with this one.

Best Webcomic - VGCats

This was another tough one. With so many excellent and hilarious webcomics, it was hard to finally decide on VGCats, until they did a Left4Dead 2 strip that literally made me laugh out loud.

Scientific Breakthrough - The Missing Link

In May of 2009, the world sat in awe as scientists found what they call 'The Missing Link'. "

"This is the first link to all humans," Hurum, of the Natural History Museum in Oslo, Norway, said in a statement. Ida represents "the closest thing we can get to a direct ancestor."

Ida, properly known as Darwinius masillae, has a unique anatomy. The lemur-like skeleton features primate-like characteristics, including grasping hands, opposable thumbs, clawless digits with nails, and relatively short limbs."

Best Web App - Spaz

Ok, I'm a little biased on this one, but it still holds true. Spaz is my favorite applet for Twitter. Using Adobe's 'Air' technology, Spaz brings twitter to your desktop in an open-source manner. You can even design it using your own CSS. How awesome is that?

Sexiest Geek Guy - Robert Downey Jr.

From Tony Stark to Sherlock Holmes, Downey sure has it made. Hailing in at 44 years of age, Robert Downey Jr still knows how to make the women of the world swoon. Dashing good looks, and a fun personality, Downey definitely claims this years Sexiest Geek Guy.

Sexiest Geek Girl - Felicia Day

The hottest chic from 'The Guild', Felicia Day has definitely paved the way for all women around the world to know that you can be very sexy, unique AND still be a hardcore nerd and gamer.

Worst Product - Twitter Peek

"The Worlds First Twitter Device" rolled onto shelves and never into hands. Deemed one of the "the Worst of '09" on many lists, the Twitter Peek really is a useless, $200 paper weight.

Biggest Douchebag - Stephenie Meyer

With fake vampries, shitty werewolves and a Mormon love story, the Twilight series sure has put it's talons into the youth of America. Ms. Meyer, I don't know how you managed to make people think your writing was well composed and worth watching in a movie, but please, share your deal with the devil so the world can move on.
