How do you know you're a geek?

By: Wyldman

Being bored lately, I pulled out my dvd's of Big Bang Theory: Season One. I've seen them countless times and as I watched them lately, it quickly dawned on me that I could see technical problems with the episodes.

For example... in the halloween episode where they all dress as The Flash and then complain that they can't all go as they are. They end up having to change their costumes and are not that happy with what they end up with. Sadly, if they had thought about it, they could have all gone.

There are many different versions of the flash. All they would need to do would be some simple changes to their costumes. There is The Flash, of course... then there is Kid Flash, Impulse and a future version of The Flash (John Fox) whose costume was blue.

Now I know due to the plotline of the story, it was funnier to just change their costumes... but they are supposed to be considered geeks and they didn't think of it and that bothers me.

Then there was the episode with the Superman marathon. They argue over how Superman flies saying it was due to Kryptonian skin cells acting like solar batteries and was connected to his feat of strength when jumping.

This has been proven to not be true according to the latest version, or near latest version, of canon. If he can only fly by jumping... then how can he hover in place and change directions? How can he fly in space where there is no gravity to hold him? How can he float above his bed in his sleep as a teen?

These and many more little things I saw as I watched the season again just got under my skin and made me wonder just how you can tell if you are a geek... and I realized that I am one.

I saw all of those little mistakes and thinking back on my life, it was me that all my friends came to when they had a question about cartoons, comics, movies or music. They could name a line from a movie or a song and I could name it. We could be listening to the radio and before any words were sung, I knew the song.

At the time, I didn't see the mantle of being a geek as a good thing. I wanted to fit in. I wanted to belong... but now, with my eyes open on the glory of being a geek, I would have to say that I'm proud to be a geek.

I may have gotten off track a little here, but I think I got my point across. You know you are a geek when you feel yourself being smarter than those who are supposed to be the smart ones. You know you are a geek when you can see the mysteries of the universe and smile thinking 'I know something you don't know'.

I think the world would be a better place if everyone could embrace their inner geek and be proud of him or her.
